Final Reflection
Dear Shannon Sanchez,
I have grown as a reader and as a writer since I began this English class. When I started the first unit, I was nervous and afraid to turn in my work each week. I was fearful about writing the wrong stuff in the wrong ways, and I was also scared I would be called out on and picked on if I made a mistake. Luckily, my fears never came true, and everyone that I worked with was friendly and understanding. By the end of the third unit, I had become more confident.
In unit 1, the concept that stood out to me was was when I learned that people can embellish a true story as long as the emotions that the person felt were felt by the readers. I learned that you do not need all of the facts of the event as long as you truthfully convey meaning in the story. I always thought that when something was a true non-fiction story, then the writing had to be limited to only the factual. This concept helped me when it came time to write out the first draft of my flash narrative. It let me let go and write.
In unit 2, I learned to use rhetorical devices to convince or persuade my audience to a claim. This practice directly relates to the threshold concept “WRITING IS A RESOURCE.”
The annotations on unit 3, made it easier for me to learn how a writer uses their sources to show that they are credible. Now, when I read, I notice that I now automatically mentally annotate it to understand the text better. If I don’t understand something in the text, I now look it up to try to understand better.
My reading and writing abilities changed and grew with each unit I completed. The skills I learned in this class will help me in the future. My greatest realization during this class was to learn that my writing is not only for me, but it is for others to read too. I will no longer be afraid to share my work with others. I have learned that when I can have others read my work and give me suggestions, I become a better writer.
I also struggled. Before I took this class, I would ignore what I did not understand. I had a hard time completing my assignments during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It is frightening when the whole world goes into lockdown. However, instead of avoiding my fears, I overcame them by choosing to write about the topic and learn more about the virus.
This class has been surprisingly fun. I did not expect English to be fun, but this one was for me. The most fun I had was getting to talk with other people in this class and learn how they solved the same writing assignments that I had to complete. I have become more confident in my writing skills after completing this course.
Thank you for a fantastic semester,
Nichole Green
